Alternatively Consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) for your Scholarship Donation.
A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from an IRA to a qualified charity. There are three distinct benefits from using this method:
The distribution counts toward meeting the annual required minimum distribution (RMD).
The amount is excluded from your taxable income.
May reduce other deductions and credits e.g. taxable Social Security benefits or Medicare surtax.

QCD Ground Rules:
Must be 70.5 years old in year of distribution.
Funds must come directly from IRA custodian.
Transfer must be made payable to the charity, in this case, the "Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation – GMS Leadership Scholarship Fund.”
